Using Technology to Facilitate Hands-on Learning

Advocates for hands-on learning argue that it promotes learning because it provides additional sources of brain activation via kinesthetic involvement, while also increasing intrinsic interest, motivation and engagement (Flick, 1993; Haury & Rillero, 1994 as cited in Klahr et al, 2007). Despite these benefits, hands-on learning experiences are also considered to have higher logistical, financial, and temporal costs when compared with other approaches to instruction (Hodson, 1996 as cited in Klahr et al, 2007). The problems that may arise during hands-on learning are often a lack of immediate feedback, confusing and inconsistent feedback or learners engaging in off-task activities that produce irrelevant information (Klahr et al, 2007). This presentation will highlight the results from a research project that investigated how technology can be used to provide students with step-by-step instructions, relevant and timely support and feedback, in-line assessment and multimedia tools to capture observations to overcome some of the problems associated with traditional hands-on learning experiences. Participants will have the opportunity to use a variety of resources while engaging in a hands-on learning activity.-Review the benefits and challenges of hands-on learning -Investigate how a variety of technology resources (LMS, Google Docs, Office 365, iPads, Chromebooks) can be used to overcome the challenges associated with hands-on learning.
