This 45-minute presentation focuses on four “’critical success factors” affecting student success in asynchronous online courses for secondary students. It draws on five years of experience and a bit of research. The presenter will share AccelerateU student successes. He will also share failures – unless his supervisor is in the room. The concept of “success factors” was first articulated by Daniel (1961) and later refined into “critical success factors” by Rockart (1979; 1981). A Critical Success Factor (CSF) is one that is necessary for an organization to achieve its mission. It is a critical factor or activity required for ensuring the success of an organization. Rockart suggested that each industry has three to six factors that determine success. These are “key jobs that must be done exceedingly well for a company to be successful” (Rockart, 1979, p. 85). These are the key areas that must be done correctly if the organization is to flourish, areas that should receive constant attention from management. Performance in each area should be continually measured, with this information made available to management.
